Rwanda
Rwanda – “the land of a
Thousand Hills”, of which almost every inch
is a mosaic of cultivation that undulates to the horizon. Bicycles
and handcarts labour beneath mini-mountains of bananas and
timber; woman in dazzling print-wraps harvest potatoes from
a green geometry of terraces. Rising before you like mystical
giants are the Virunga peaks - Five massive cloud capped volcanoes,
home to over half of the world’s wild mountain gorillas
and the gravesite of the legendary Dian Fossey.
Rwanda
is not only about apes – to the east is Akagera
National Park, home to a variety of wildlife including buffalo,
giraffe, elephant, warthog, the elusive leopard and occasional
stray lion. To the eastern corner is Nyungwe Forest, the largest
Afro-montane forest in East and Central African and one of the
most ancient. Here 13 primate species delight the tree tops with
their acrobatic displays, giant Lobelia dazzle against a backdrop
of green forest.
A visit to Rwanda is not complete without a trip
to the Gisozi Genocide Museum, a power reminder of events which
overtook every corner of this magnificent country. |

"Travelling to Rwanda with XA! Safaris was an experience I will never forget. What a beautiful country, rich in colour with amazing people, and of course the formidable Gorillas.
We had a fantastic time with expert guides, it is definitely an experience not to be missed and one that Lisa made sure ran smoothly. "
