Oliotya (hello) everyone
Apart from Uganda’s fascinating road signs, it’s the
Kingdom of Buganda that really captivates the imagination! Within
the Kingdom are 52 clans which are located in and around Kampala,
the capital of Uganda. The people of Buganda are referred to as Baganda,
their language is referred to at Luganda, and they refer to their
customs as Kiganda customs.
Each clan has a different Totem name which include the Grasshopper
clan, Black & White clan, Buffalo clan, Lion, Kob, Sheep, Cattle
egret, African fire finch, Cat, Fish, Vervet monkey, pangolin to
name a few.
And each totem has many sayings and superstitions. For example,
the Buffalo clan, as a moral way of bringing up their children and
teaching them good manners that if a buffalo crossed from left to
right is was a good thing, but from right to left, is was not!
Another general belief is that if you sweep at night, you will become
poor - the idea is that you can sweep little valuables at night that
you couldn’t see easily.
Also, if you sit on a hot stone (the coals used to heat up a saucepan
with) you don’t give birth if you are a female and if male,
you don’t function. The idea being that you should not get
burnt!
